*What are oil pastels you ask? Oil pastels are small crayon-esque sticks that have a creamy, wax-like consistency. Oil pastels come in a variety of intense hues that don’t dry out completely. Like oil painting, oil pastels can be blended with household materials such as makeup sponges & tissues and thinned with baby oil and cotton swabs to produce different artful effects. Oil pastels can also be applied very thickly and then carved into to reveal unique patterns and color underneath. Oil pastels are dense, fill the grain of the paper nicely and do not require a fixative.

*What are chalk pastels you ask? Chalk pastels come in the form of a small stick and are made with a combination of powdered pigment and a binder. Chalk pastels do not adhere to the surface, allowing it to be brushed off, blended and mixed on the paper surface. This fun drawing technique can be readily smudged, but it results in a bit of dust. Finished drawings require protecting, either framing under glass or spraying with an aerosol fixative to prevent smudging (hairspray works well – the instructors spray a layer on chalk pastel pieces outside before work goes home).
